Dichroic glass

  • Dichroic glass is very special, it is different from regular glass due to the fact that it contains multiple colours and can even appear opalescent.
  • It is made by using many ultra thin layers of different metals including gold and silver also oxides of such metals as titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium and silica. 
  • The coating process is completed in a vacuum deposition chamber by vaporizing the quartz and metal oxides with an electron beam gun and condensing micro thin layers on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure.
  • The finished glass may have up to 30 to 50 layers of these materials yet the thickness of the coating is approximately 30 to 35 millionths of an inch, so an extremely thin layer onto the glass.
